Maine Roller Derby hosting international tournament June 8-9
Skatecationland: the way derby should be
Portland, Maine – February 5, 2024 –Maine Roller Derby (MRD) will host its first international tournament on June 8-9, 2024 at Happy Wheels in Westbrook, Maine. The tournament, called Skatecationland: the way derby should be, features Bux-Mont Roller Derby from Hatfield, PA, the Muddy River Rollers from Moncton, NB and Lehigh Valley Roller Derby out of Bethlehem, PA facing off against MRD’s All-Star Travel Team. The sanctioned games will affect MRD’s 56th place ranking in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s Northeast region.
“Maine Roller Derby took its biggest hit ever during the pandemic. It’s taken us years to restart our competitive program. This felt like such a huge opportunity to bring high-level roller derby to Maine,” said tournament director Heather “Dash” Steeves. “For more than 10 years our league has traveled the country to defend our spot in the international rankings, now it’s time to bring the world to us.”
Derby fans can expect two days packed with roller derby action on June 8-9 from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM at Happy Wheels. Each day will feature three sanctioned games at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. In addition to our visiting teams and local officials and volunteers, MRD is excited to welcome 21 visiting, guest officials who are making this tournament happen. MRD is thrilled to present the only roller derby tournament in Maine this year and the first since the pandemic.
