Wicked 70, Good 156
Wicked vs Good IV | Oct 8, 2011 | Bout Recap by Milhouse Van Bouten
Maine Roller Derby’s annual tradition of intraleague competition played out another chapter on October 8th at the Portland Expo. The league was once again shuffled and split down the middle, and the two sides set to do battle in front of their Expo fans to see which side would leave victorious: the pious and wholesome Team Good, or the wild and outrageous Team Wicked. Team Good carried home the victory last year in a very closely fought battle, and rolled into the arena with pinwheels and smiles, confident that their strong moral compass would lead them to a repeat win. But would Team Wicked’s thirst for revenge be too much to handle?
The bout began with a steady pattern of speed vs defense. Speed started the bout as Wicked’s Grim D. Mise and Good’s Spry Icicle took the jammer line for their teams, Spry grabbing lead but forced to call as Grim tailed her to the pack. In jam 2, Team Good’s Punchy O’Guts would take down Wicked’s jammer Princess Lay Her Out to allow Good’s jammer Lady Gay Gay to recover from blocks by Kissy Kicks and Shirley B. Slammin’ for lead status. Team Wicked’s Busty Mayhem caught Lady Gay Gay in the second pass to prevent more points. Jam 3 picked up the speed again with Spry Icicle and Grim D. Mise jamming, this time, Spry chasing down lead jammer Grim to force the quick call. Both teams would cycle through their roster, throwing the star cover on a wide variety of their skaters, and Team Good established a steady offensive pace. Team Good’s defense took over in jam 13 as they controlled the jam speed and forced Wicked jammer Grim D. Mise to play defense against Good’s jammer Lady Gay Gay. However, the next jam, Wicked took over as Shirley B. Slammin’s blasted off the jammer line and charged up the middle for a quick lead status and points while teammate Gunner Hands-Off kept Good jammer Tri-scare-atops busy. Team Good would finish the half strong, with lead jams from Spry Icicle and Mother Bones, and fierce blocking from Tri-scare-atops on Wicked jammer Kissy Kicks in jam 19. At the end of the half, Team Good was in a solid lead, 76 – 26.
Period Two began with a misstep on the part of Team Good: as Li’l Punisher and Mother Bones combined to pinch off Grim D. Mise, Good jammer Spry Icicle would make it through the pass, but without the star helmet cover. With a good scoring opportunity gone, Good tried to follow up in the next jam, but was hindered by the blocking of Shirley B. Slammin’ as Red-demption stole lead jammer away for Team Wicked. Li’l Punisher landed a heavy shot on Wicked jammer Grim D. Mise, but was unable to stop her from getting lead. Team Wicked was suddenly on a roll, hindered only by Spry Icicle’s ability to escape the pack and force the Team Wicked jammers to call early. Team Good called a timeout after jam 5 to regroup. By jam 8, Team Good’s defense regained their rhythm as the 4-pack of Punchy O’Guts, Li’l Punisher, Lez Lemon and Dollipops smothered Wicked jammer Shirley B. Slammin’ while Spry Icicle re-padded Team Good’s lead. The intensity picked up in jam 9 as Team Wicked’s Mae Snap and Kissy Kicks tag-team blocked Tri-scare-atops while Grim D. Mise grabbed lead. Grim received a major back block penalty, handing a power jam opportunity to Team Good and Tri-scare-atops. Sensing the urgency Wicked’s Busty Mayhem crushed Tri-scare-atops in turn three, earning a direction-of-gameplay major, but clearly doing damage and Tri-scare-atops winced through the remainder of the jam. Wicked desperately began picking up the pace, forcing every jam to start immediately by taking a knee before the whistle so they had as much time possible to put points on the board. The strategy was sound, but Team Good’s defense was on fire and the Wicked jammers simply didn’t have enough time left to turn it around. Team Good sailed on to their 2nd victory in a row, 156 – 70.
