The Janes get stung by the Bees
May 14, 2011 | Portland Expo | Bout Recap by Punchy O’Guts
The Calamity Janes last met up with the Providence Killah Bees three years ago in June of 2008 (see recap here) with an edge-of-the-seater that went into overtime with the Bees winning by 2 points. This go around, both teams sported new faces on the roster with just F’Shizzy Borden and Shelby Bruisin’ returning for Providence and A-Block and WrexZilla for Maine.

The first jam started with Maine’s Kissy Kicks and Providence’s The Phury lining up with the star. Kissy snatched lead before the pack skated a full lap, but took a spill at the front of the pack, allowing Bee’s blocker Penny Candy Poison to take her down with a big hit. Kissy hopped up but found herself behind a wall of yellow and black. The Phury snuck through the inside with Janes blockers on the chase, but not able to take her down before the dreaded 20 feet. Bee’s blockers held a tight wall at the front with Kissy juking behind and her blockers trailing further behind her. With The Phury gaining on her, Kissy called the jam with no one scoring.
In the next jam, Rhoda Perdition of the Bees got lead, scored four points and called it before Maine’s Crazy Buchanan could score. In the following jam, Kissy went up against Ruca A. Salt and earned lead jammer, but was late to call it, which allowed the Bees to score four points to her four.
The fourth jam secured a lead for the Bees when Janes jammer WrexZilla was sent to the penalty box, giving the Bees a power jam ending with 19 points and the score at 4-27 in their favor. The Bee’s stinger twisted deeper in the next jam, when their blockers held Janes jammer Lady GayGay in the pack while Bee’s jammer, The Phury, racked up 10 more points. With less than a minute on the jam clock, GayGay was sent to the box for a major forearm. The Janes hustled to the front and ran the pack fast, keeping The Phury from capitalizing on her power jam.
For the rest of the period the Janes chipped away at the score, but the Bee’s defense repeatedly shut down the Janes jammers. Kissy Kicks, although she jammed only six times, got lead every time and scored all the points but for 5. The half ended with Maine 23, Providence 104.
In the second half the Janes stepped up their defense, allowing the Bees to score only 64 points (61% of what they scored in the first half), and their offense as well. The Janes scored almost double what they’d scored in the first half. The second period scoring was 41-64, a much tighter game, but Maine’s rally was too late and couldn’t stand up against the first-period sting. The bout ended 64-168 in favor of the Bees.
