Calamity Janes 41, Boston B Party 188
Bout recap by Punchy O’Guts
The Calamity Janes suffered a loss in their first bout of the 2011 season against Boston’s B Party. The bout occurred April 3rd at Happy Wheels in Portland, ME.
The B Party, Boston Derby Dames’s b-team, entered the bout coming off two wins against Montreal’s b-team and Central Mass’s Petticoat Punishers. When asked about what they expect during the bout, Hayley Contagious, captain of the team, said “We know the Janes are a really strong team. We’re staying optimistic. We’re meshing really well, and we have a lot of coherence. We are a really fun team, and we like each other. Win or lose, this will be a fun bout.”
The Janes, a mix of seasoned skaters and first-time bouters, scrimmaged against Granite State the month before and earned a huge win. The team was ready to add a second victory to the record. Prior to the bout, Joech, the coach of the Janes, said “We were watching the B Party during warm-up and expect a fast, stable team. We plan to be relentless and make them play our game.”
In the first jam of the bout, the B Party put the smack down. Maine’s Alice Saltya took on Hayley at the jammer line. While Hayley quickly earned lead, Alice struggled in a tight pack of Boston blockers. Hayley bolted back to the pack to earn the first four points. Alice broke the pack and Hayley called the jam before she began a scoring pass.
Boston held Maine scoreless until the eigth jam, when Maine jammer Crazy Buchanan earned lead and scored one point, though not before Boston scored 3. Two jams later, Kissy Kicks, with just two blockers, went up against Mrs. Dash. Kissy didn’t earn lead, but she squeaked out four points before Dash called the jam off.
The rest of the period played out the same with Boston banking on the Hit-it-and-Quit-it. Maine’s blockers played heavy defense on Boston jammers, but were unable to contain them. The Maine jammers took hit after hit by Boston’s blockers, but eventually scrapped their way out. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to before Boston scored. The first period ended with Boston having a strong lead: 13-89.
The Janes entered the second half determined to shrink the point spread. Boston continued to throw down Hit-it-and-Quit-Its. Though Maine was given plenty of powerjams, they could not capitalize on the opportunities to score big. Boston held tight at the front of the pack, pinging off any Jane blocker who threatened their formation.
With Maine jammers repeatedly visiting the penalty box, Boston used the opportunity to rack up points. Boston, up by almost 100 points with 11 mins to go, added another 23 points to their total while Kissy Kicks sat in the box.
In the last jam of the bout, Kissy stood alone on the jammer line, given a chance to end strong with her own powerjam. But with just two blockers to take on four of Boston’s, Kissy couldn’t break the pack. Boston’s jammer returned with fire in her belly. Instead of breaking the pack and sprinting on to score, she passed her star to the pivot, who scored 11 points while Kissy took blow after blow. With eight seconds left on the clock, Kissy escaped and raced back to the pack. The jam ended just before she could eke out one point. Final score: 41-188.
