Port Authorities Handle Dutchland, 103-69

PORTLAND, ME — On Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 Maine Roller Derby’s Port Authorities hosted the Dutchland Derby Rollers’ All-Stars in Portland, Maine for a WFTDA sanctioned game. Both teams entered the game with short losing streaks; the Port Authorities (officially ranked #9 in the East), to Boston (128-24), Charm City (157-52), and Providence (110-59). Dutchland (not yet eligible for WFTDA rankings) previously lost out to DC (90-83) and Steel City (230-82). Tonight, the home team ultimately secured the win over Dutchland, 103-69.
The first half began with Maine’s Olive Spankins starting the game off strong for the home team with a 10-0 jam over Dutchland’s Spawna Skatin. Jam 2 would see both teams scoreless, while jam 3 saw Maine’s Jacked Rabbit put another shut out over Dutchland’s Cole Slaughter 4-0. Spawna Skatin’ returned in jam 4 to put some points on the board for her team and had a nice 10-0 run over Olive Spankins. Jam 5 saw Maine’s Killer Quick give another 4-0 over Ducthland’s Twisted Scizzors. Cole Slaughter, who recently returned from a foot injury, earned lead status in jam 6 and was able to best Jacked Rabbit, but only 5-4.
Over the next several jams, Maine was able to continue putting points on the board as Dutchland was only able to finagle a few. In Jam 7 Maine lost jammer Olive Spankins to a re-aggravated injury, leaving Jacked Rabbit, Killer Quick, and Jones ‘N in the jammer rotation. Jam 10 also saw the loss of a Maine blocker, Miss Creant, who went down with a shoulder injury and was out for the game. Finally, in jam 11, Twisted Scizzors delivered a 14-0 onto Killer Quick who spent the jam in the box on a back-blocking major, putting Dutchland ahead for the first (and only) time in the game with a total score of 34-33.
Unimpressed with Scizzors’ skills, Jacked Rabbit answered back with her own 14-0 for the home team in the following jam, setting in motion a sequence that would leave Dutchland unable to score the remainder of the period. Over the next 4 jams, Maine put another 19 points on the board. The score at the half was 66-34 in favor of the home team.
The second period started with Maine continuing to assert their lead with Jacked Rabbit shutting out Twisted Scizzors, 8-0, followed by her teammate, Killer Quick, putting down a 4-0 shut out over Dutchland’s Lapcat. Cole Slaughter would come back in the third jam of the period an put up 10 points for the visitors, however, Killer Quick would answer back in the following jam with another 4-0, tipping the score to 82-44, almost double Dutchland’s score.
The next 2 jams saw Dutchland pick up 5 more points while holding Maine scoreless. Continuing the back and forth nature of the game, Maine then dominated a succession of 3 jams, putting up another 13 while Dutchland watched their score board stand still.
Twisted Scizzors broke the routine and snuck in a 4-0 jam, however, Maine answered back by holding Dutchland to zero points over the next 3 jams, while earning 8 of their own. The remaining 3 jams of the game would see Maine unable to score, while Dutchland feverishly attempted to close the gap of 103-53. During those final jams, Dutchland’s jammer rotation of Cole Slaughter, Spawna Skatin’, and Twisted Scizzors were able to throw up another 16 points. Final score, 103-69.

Dutchland’s jammers seemed to be in sync with their output; Spawna Skatin’ earning 26 points, Twisted Scizzors with 23, and Cole Slaughter 20. Scizzors had the highest single scoring jam of the game with 14 points, she also managed to have the highest point differential with an even zero.
Working the back of the pack were O’Chit, Rachel Slur, and Mary that Motha OH GOD! (who won her team’s MVP). Skaters Hillbilly Hellcat, Treasure Chest, and Laverne and Surly gave Maine’s front players a run for their money. Also on the floor were Bunny McBones, Cherry Crush, Jolene Jawbreaker, Lapcat, and Spinal Snap. Treasure Chest made the most trips to the box for her team with 10 minors and 3 majors. Overall, Dutchland was assigned 64 minors and 10 majors.
Jacked Rabbit was her team’s star jammer for the night, earning 60 points overall with an average of 5 points per jam and a +39 point differential. Rabbit also had the highest single score jam for her team with 14 points and was named game MVP for the Port Authorities. Killer Quick contributed 24 points overall, while Olive Spankins had 10 (before leaving the track in period one due to injury), and Jones’N with 9.
Maine’s blockers held a very strong front wall headed by The Mom Bomb and constant threat Lois Blow with consistent good blocking from Punchy O’Guts and Patty O’Mean. Also on the track were Miss Creant (injured during 1st period), Itsy Bitsy Fighter, Trouble&Strife, Terror Byte, and Mary Jane Pain Train. Jones’N led her team in trips to the box with 3 majors, but Lois Blow was assigned 15 minors. Overall, Maine had 54 minors and 9 majors assigned.
Next up for Maine, the Port Authorities will host the Philly Rollergirls’ Liberty Belles (ranked #2 in the East) on June 13th, while back in PRG’s homestate of Pennsylvania, the Dutchland All-Stars will host the Long Island Rollers Rebels (ranked #13 in the East) the same evening.
