Maine Roller Derby’s Port Authorities kicked off their competitive season with the annual March Lucky Lass bout Saturday, March 9th at Happy Wheels. Their opponents for the night were fellow Maine league Rock Coast Rollers out of Rockland. The ladies from RCR had tangled with MRD several times before in recent memory, first defeating the Calamity Janes in the 2012 New England B-Team Tournament in Worcester, MA; and handily defeating the R.I.P. Tides later in the year in Rockland at the Maine Event. With victories over both MRD’s B and C teams under their belt, the Rollers were eager to invade Portland and try their luck against MRD’s All-Stars.
Jam one introduced some bad breaks to both teams almost immediately, as PA jammer Grim D. Mise shook a block from RCR’s Mistress of the Knife to gain lead and start a power jam in the process. Later in the jam, Grim committed a low block and a jammer switch occurred, immediately putting RCR on offense. Rock Coast jammer Sinner of Gravity was able to make up a pass for 4 points, but could not cancel out all 18 from Grim. RCR’s fortune would take a quick turn for the worse when jammer Vegemighty Slamwitch earned two penatlies in the same jam, allowing Kissy Kicks and Grim D. Mise to combine for 44 points in jams two and three. RCR’s Mistress of the Knife sparked her team’s defense with her signature backwards spears, drawing a high hit penalty on the PA’s Red-demption in jam four (and inciting what would appear to be a rivalry between the two throughout the game), and further punishing MRD’s Spry Icicle in jam seven. The spark helped RCR score 6 – 5 over MRD in jams four through seven. However, Grim D. Mise had yet another power jam in jam eight and added 20-0 to the scoreboard. From there, the PA’s began finding their targets and canceling out Rock Coast’s defense, establishing a steady multiple pass scoring march while holding RCR to zero. Sinner of Gravity added 13 points to RCR’s total in jam 14, but it was the only points scored for their team in jams eight through 18 and paled in comparison to the 106 that were stacked by Grim D. Mise, Spry Icicle, Bea Nimble and Kissy Kicks in the same time frame. By halftime, the lasses from MRD had a healthy 183 – 26 lead.
The Rock Coast defense knew they had to step it up if they had any chance of reversing the landslide. Down a jammer in jam two, Mistress of the Knife and Bristol Smashin’ teamed up and drew a cut penalty on Kissy Kicks to negate the power jam. The RCR defense played strongly through the initial jams of the second half and took most of the wind out of the PA’s sails. Their offense could not get around the solid walls of MRD, however, Rock Coast was able to only be outscored by seven through the first six jams, a massive improvement from their first period finish. With the RCR defense boost, the PA’s game switched to further attacking the RCR offense, and it paid off. PA blockers Red-demption and Tri-scare-atops drew a cut on jammer Mistress of the Knife to negate an RCR power jam in jam seven. In the following jam, PA’s Grim D. Mise baited RCR’s Vegemighty Slamwitch into a jammer duel, which Grim won and was able to force the escaping Vegemighty back into the pack, enabling Grim to score 21-0. The PA’s continued to safely move up the scoreboard little by little, taking away any momentum the Rollers were able to gather. By the end of the bout, the sun was shining on the Port Authorities as they earned a 320 – 82 victory.
