Maine Roller Derby becomes a 501c3 nonprofit
Maine Roller Derby recently became a 501c3 nonprofit. The league has a long, long history of donating any profits to other local charities, such as Preble Street, which was the beneficiary of the November bout. But now it’s official: MRD is a nonprofit!
“This is huge for us,” said Frida Rockit, the vice-chair of MRD’s board of directors. “Roller derby is such a healthy thing for Maine women: You get exercise, a community and a stronger sense of self. That’s hard to find anywhere else. We just want to spread our passion for the sport. Becoming a nonprofit means we can now write grants, accept donations and develop some exciting programs. “
Maine Roller Derby’s mission is to empower women and help grow the sport of roller derby. Becoming a nonprofit is going to help the league achieve this by allowing the league to accept tax-deductible donations and use those for important programs we want to develop (ummm … junior roller derby for young girls in Maine, perhaps? Maybe someday soon.).
