Happy Wheels Skater Center to Close
Maine Roller Derby was incredibly saddened to learn yesterday that Happy Wheels Skate Center, one of our main practice spaces, will be closing its doors forever on December 15, 2019, the day after MRD’s Coming Out bout. The property was recently sold to a developer. This is a huge loss for so many – from the employees of Happy Wheels, who are losing jobs, to Derby Skate Club, Casco Bay Roller Derby, Zumba, local schools, summer camps, and community groups who utilize the space for community gathering, recreation and fundraising – and everyone in our community who enjoys the rink for the fun and healthy experiences it has provided for more than four decades.
Our league is now working in collaboration with community partners, including Derby Skate Club, Casco Bay Roller Derby, and others, to respond to this loss. We will work together to find a new skating space as soon as possible. As a 501c3 nonprofit organization in our 13th year of operation, Maine Roller Derby is home to four teams plus a brand new junior skating skills class. We plan to continue promoting roller skating and roller derby in Southern Maine – and we can use your help!
Maine Roller Derby is looking for a space large enough to house at least one track; ideally 75 x 108 feet of clear space (about 8,100 sq ft), but the board will consider all viable options. If you have ANY leads on such a space please contact us at directors@mainerollerderby.com.
