Central Maine Derby 138, R.I.P. Tides 171
The R.I.P. Tides versus Central Maine Derby | March 24, 2013 | The Bangor Auditorium, Bangor Maine | Bout Recap by Chris Seneca
Sunday March 24, 2013, was a day of “firsts” and “lasts” in Bangor, Maine. The Inaugural Brawl marked Central Maine Derby’s (CMD) first home bout, the R.I.P. Tides’ first bout of the 2013 season, and the debut of women’s flat track roller derby at the Bangor Auditorium. It also marked the last sporting event to ever be held at the Bangor Auditorium. With over 1200 enthusiastic fans new and old, cheering on the action, it is obvious that roller derby is here to stay in Bangor.
Maine Roller Derby’s own Pixie Quikenwitty was on hand to announce the bout, as only she can. After the ‘National Anthem’ she introduced both teams and their skaters with cheers and applause greeting each one. Next was a quick lesson on the finer points of the sport with some help from both teams, much to the delight of the crowd. It was obvious that both the skaters and the crowd were anxious for the action to start.
The first whistle saw the RIP’s jammer Nutritional Beast squaring off against CMD’s Siren Plague. A track cut sent Nutritional Beast to the penalty box, giving CMD the power jam, but that was short lived, as Siren Plague was forced into a track cut by the RIP’s Gunner Hands-Off. The crowd erupted at the end of the first jam, as CMD had put up 10 to the RIP Tides 4 points. The second jam saw Zeldangerous for the RIP Tides taking 1 point to Ransom Note’s 2. The lead for CMD was short-lived, because on the third jam their jammer Nurse Heartless was sent to the box on a track cut allowing lead jammer Kirsten Damned to rack up 15 points on the power jam putting the RIP Tides ahead 20 to 14. The fourth jam of the afternoon saw the RIP Tides again on the power jam with Byte Size Bandit scoring 10 points. On jams 5 and 6 Nutritional Beast and Zeldangerous each quickly broke through the pack and made off with 4 points and then called the jam before CMD created a threat. Jam seven saw the RIP Tides on the power jam again with Kirsten Damned racking up 20 points to Ransom Note’s 1. Jams 9 through 11 saw the RIP Tides scoring quickly and ending the jams early to minimize any threats by CMD. No points on jam 12 saw the RIP Tides ahead of CMD 71-18. With jam 13 CMD started mounting some offense as Siren Plague scored 11 to Nutritional Beast’s 6. Zeldangerous scored 2 quick points on jam 14. Jam 15 saw CMD’s Nurse Heartless breakout and score 20 points while their defense held Kirsten Damned to zero points.
