THE CALAMITY JANES VS THE QUEEN CITY CHERRY BOMBS | May 4, 2013 | JFK MEMORIAL COLISEUM | BOUT RECAP BY JIMMY ROLLSOME
On May 4th Maine Roller Derby’s Calamity Janes rode the trail southwest to Manchester, NH for a showdown with New Hampshire Roller Derby’s Queen City Cherry Bombs. The Janes and Cherry Bombs last met in August at the All 8 on the Floor B-Team Tournament, with the Janes coming out with the win, 94-51. Tonight, the Cherry Bombs held the home team advantage.
The bout began off with Eva LaDiva jamming for the Janes, against NHRD’s Techno Destructo. Eva picked up lead status and 10 points on a power jam before being assessed a penalty herself, freeing Techno Destructo from the box to earn 5 points of her own before the end of the jam. The Janes dictated the pace at the beginning of the bout gaining lead jammer status in eight of the first ten jams and NHRD being held scoreless in six of the first ten jams. The score was 34-16 after the tenth jam in favor of the Janes with Zeldangerous, Eva LaDiva, WilyKat, and Kirsten Damned contributing points, while NHRD answered with points from Techno Destructo, Sü McKenzie, and JC Superscar.
After WilyKat “hit it and quit it” for 2 points in jam 11, NHRD began to whittle away at the Janes’ lead, 36-16. NHRD held the Janes scoreless for jams 12 through 14, with JC Superscar and Prissassin each picking up 4 points in jams 12 and 13. Kirsten Damned had a huge 20-point power jam for the Janes in jam 15, with Dubliner Broozes, View Grind’er, Tokyo Rollz, and Princess LayHer Out clearing the way for her. The Janes held NHRD scoreless for jams 16 through 19 with narrow gaps pressuring the jammers on both sides to call it early. NHRD rallied in jam 20 when JC Superscar scored 5 before Wily Kat could pose a threat. The Janes were held scoreless for jams 21 through 23 while NHRD picked up an additional 6 points. Things started to heat up in jam 24 when Eva LaDiva picked up lead jammer status and scored three points, but was sent to the box for a track cut, which allowed JC to pick up 24 points on the power jam before being sent to the box herself. The last jam of the first half started the Janes on the power jam with Zeldangerous wearing the star. She scored 15 points while Tokyo Rollz, Gunner Hands-Off, and View Grind’er controlled the pack, and once the whistle had blown the score was 81-59 in favor of MRD.
Can you say “hit it and quit it”? I knew you could. After NHRD’s Sü McKenzie “hit it and quit it” for 3 points in jam 2, the Janes came back to hold NHRD scoreless for jams 3 through 8. Highlights included Margot Tenenbomb recycling Prissassin, allowing WilyKat to pick up a natural grand slam; WilyKat in scoring 15 points while Sü McKenzie was trapped by the Janes’ blockers, and 8 points by Zeldangerous after she took the inside line, as Kirsten Damned recycled NHRD’s JC Superscar. The score was now 125-65 in favor of the Calamity Janes after the 10th jam.
Both team continued to put pressure on the lead jammers as the second half progress with NHRD’s Emily Decker’son picking up 4 points in jam 11, Zeldangerous scoring 4 for the Janes in jam 12. The “hit it and quit strategy was paying off for the Janes, as their lead continued to grow. After Emily Decker’son picked up 4 points for NHRD in jam 15, the Janes would only allow 2 points over the course of the next five jams. Jam 20 ended the score was 149-79 with MRD keeping the lead.
In jam 21 Margot Tenenbomb cleared the way for Zeldangerous, who picked up lead jammer status and 8 points before being sent to the box on a back block penalty. With NHRD on the power jam Emily Decker’son took full advantage and picked up 18 points that brought the hometown crowd back to life. After no points were scored in jam 24, NHRD sent Techno Destructo to the line against The Rehabiliskater for the Janes. WilyKat, Nutritional Beast, and Eva LaDiva controlled held the Cherry Bomb’s jammer, allowing The Rehabiliskater to get lead status and 5 points. Jam 27 would prove to be the final jam of the game with the Janes sending Kirsten Damned against NHRD’s Emily Decker’son. Kirsten Damned picked up lead jammer status, while the Janes’ Cabbage Smash Kid, Princess LayHer Out, Hans YOLO, and Eva LaDiva tied up the NHRD jammer. Kirsten scored 4 points before calling the jam when the period clock expired. MRD’s Calamity Janes win over NHRD Queen City Cherry Bombs 176-109 in a faced paced bout filled with hard hits, smart quits, and thrilling power jams.
