About Us
Maine Roller Derby is Maine’s first and only women’s flat track roller derby league. The league began its formation in March 2006, and began practicing on skates in early June 2006. We are skater-owned and -operated, and currently have a roster of over 30 hard-hitting, fast-skating athletes. We are a proud member league of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (www.wftda.org)
, and are one of the hundreds of leagues across the nation that have embraced the quickly-growing sport of roller derby as it is skated on a flat track. Please visit the WFTDA website for more information about the national flat track derby community.
MRD is a diverse group of women. We’ve got: 
- Girlie-girls and women who wouldn’t be caught dead in a skirt or stockings
- Lifelong athletes and women who’ve never touched a sport in their lives
- Tattooed beauties and landscapes of virgin skin
- Short girls, tall girls, big girls, small girls
- Moms, girlfriends, wives, and joyously single women
- Straight girls, gay girls, and anything in between
- Loud-mouthed firecrackers and quiet, reserved badasses
- The list goes on and on...
- Fishnets and/or skirts are required
- It’s fake or staged. We are athletes who train rigorously to excel in our full-contact sport. Come watch a bout and you’ll never doubt it again
- Size is an issue
- It’s “violent.” Roller derby is an organized, aggressive, full-contact sport with legal checks and blocks and ways to contact opposing players. Illegal moves result in penalties.

August 21, 2010: Maine Children's Cancer Program
As part of the Portland Music & Arts Festival, MRD raised $148 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program by raffling off a 2010 season pass.
June 2010: Frannie Peabody Center
MRD represented and assisted FPC in the Portland Pride Parade.
May 7, 2010: Preble Street Resource Center
MRD joined with Sanctuary Tattoo in a benefit event for Preble Street Resource Center. MRD donated bout tickets for a raffle that raised $130 for the center.
May 3, 2010: Maine Civil Rights Conference
MRD presented two seminars to school group on stereotypes in sports.
April 28-May 2, 2010: MPBN Auction
MRD donated tickets for the auction and aided in the campaign by presenting auction items during the live televised event.
April 24, 2010: MS Walk
MRD raised over $400 and walked/skated to help fight MS.
October 29, 2009: A Dash of Diva
MRD donated a merchandise bag as part of the Dash of Diva raffle meant to raise money for the Maine Women's Fund and the Press for Higher Education Scholarship. In addition, MRD skaters worked as volunteers for the event.
The event was designed to bring women together to celebrate life, experience great food, discover a variety of products and services offered by participating vendors and enjoy live entertainment, while contributing to the community.
October 28, 2009: Long Creek Youth Development Center
MRD held a scrimmage for the residents of LCYDC, formally known as the Maine Youth Center, to introduce roller derby as a way of having fun in a healthy activity without using drugs or criminal activity. We emphasized the importance of physical activity - full-contact sports in particular - as a legal and super fun way to be aggressive and physical with your peers and for your community.
June 13, 2009: The Telling Room
MRD donated 5% of door sales from the June 13, 2009 bout.
The Telling Room is a nonprofit writing program in Portland, ME, dedicated to young writers & storytellers between ages 8 -18. Their goal is to meet each student's passion for writing with equal enthusiasm, to provide role models, and to privilege the act of storytelling as a vital means of expression & community-building.
May 23, 2009: STRIVE
MRD donated 5% of door sales from the May 23, 2009 bout.
The STRIVE Program is designed to address the many issues faced by young adults with disabilities. A few areas of focus include improving fundamental academic skills, developing leadership potential,& improving economic opportunities through continuing education.
May 2, 2009: UpBeat Feet! Dance Ensemble
MRD donated 5% of door sales from the May 2, 2009 bout.
UpBeat Feet! is a branch of Portland Youth Dance (PYD), a non-profit organization whose mission is to cultivate personal artistic growth for youth while striving for creative excellence in dance.

April 27 2009: National Kidney Foundation
MRD donated 4 tickets to the June 13, 2009 bout for the National Kidney Foundation's Bangor Great Chef's Auction. The vision of the NKF is to enhance the lives of everyone with, at risk of or affected by kidney disease.April 27 2009: National Kidney Foundation

March 22 & April 11 2009: Maine Academy of Modern Music
MRD donated a $300 scholarship and 5% of door sales to MAMM. The Maine Academy of Modern Music is not your average music school. They're a non-profit school focused on creating positive learning experiences in musical arts for all students. MAMM offers music camps, music lessons and comprises ensembles.
*MAMM student bands played half-time shows at both the March 22 and April 11 bouts.
Dec 2, 2008: Maine Public Broadcasting Network
Several members of MRD volunteered during the on-air television pledge drive for the Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN).

Sept 13, 2008: A Company of Girls
MRD gave $2 off ticket sales for those who donated art supplies.
A Company of Girls (ACOG) is an after school theatre and arts-based resiliency program for girls aged 8-18. The members of ACOG are from many diverse communities in the greater Portland Area. Transportation is provided for those girls who need it to get to and from the program.
Sept 27, 2008: People's Regional Opportunity Program
MRD gave $2 off ticket sales for those who donated food, clothing or toiletries to the center. Full donation included four boxes and two bags of food.PROP works to transform our community by helping people in need to build better lives. It is an organization of distinction where people come first to seek help in building better lives and to be part of helping others.
Oct 11, 2008: Animal Refuge League
MRD gave $2 off ticket sales for those who pet food and supplies. Full donation included four boxes of food and supplies.Our mission is to provide temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned and relinquished animals, and to place as many as possible into responsible and caring homes. The Animal Refuge League also works to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals and to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.
Spring Season 2008: Frannie Peabody Center
MRD's own Chantel Kill n Sell painted several derby-inspired images for sale with all proceeds going to FPC. Total donation was $623.Frannie Peabody Center is committed to compassionate care for the community infected with and affected by HIV and AIDS in Maine. The Center helps the community face and fight the realities of the disease by providing prevention education and direct services, including housing, information, education, advocacy, and counseling services. The Center treats the whole person with dignity, care and compassion.
April 12 & May 17, 2008: Preble Street Resource Center
MRD gave $2 off ticket sales for those who donated food, clothing or toiletries to the center. Full donation included nine boxes of food and four bags of clothes.Preble Street's mission is to provide accessible, barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger and poverty; and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
May 2, 2008: Dress for Success Southern Maine
MRD gave $2 off ticket sales for who donated a purse. Full donation included two giant bags of purses.The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
