The league began its formation in March 2006, and began practicing on skates in early June 2006. We are skater-owned and -operated, and currently have a roster of over 30 hard-hitting, fast-skating, heart-breaking skaters. As a proud member league of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (<a href="http://www.wftda.org">www.wftda.org</a>)<a href="http://www.wftda.org"><img src="images/WFTDA_Logo-3.jpg" class="floatRight"/></a>, we follow the rules they set forth, and are one of many leagues across the nation that have embraced the quickly-growing sport of roller derby as it is skated on a flat track, as opposed to the old days of banked-track competition.<br /> <br /> MRD is actively recruiting referees and general volunteer staff.<br /> <br /> <strong> MRD is a diverse group of women. We’ve got:</strong> <img src="images/pvrd0107/images/070114_Derby_0025.jpg" class="floatRight"/> <ul> <li>Girlie-girls and women who wouldn’t be caught dead in a skirt or stockings</li> <li>Lifelong athletes and women who’ve never touched a sport in their lives</li> <li>Tattooed beauties and landscapes of virgin skin</li> <li>Short girls, tall girls, big girls, small girls</li> <li>Moms, girlfriends, wives, and joyously single women</li> <li>Straight girls, gay girls, and anything in between</li> <li>Loud-mouthed firecrackers and quiet, reserved badasses</li> <li>The list goes on and on...</li> </ul> <strong>Myths about roller derby:</strong> <ul> <li>Fishnets and/or skirts are required</li> <li>It’s fake or staged. We are athletes who train three times a week to excel in our full-contact sport. Come watch a bout and you’ll never doubt it again</li> <li>Size is an issue</li> <li> You can be too old to skate</li> <li>We’re in it only to look good</li> <li>It’s “violent.” Roller derby is an organized, aggressive, full-contact sport with legal checks and blocks and ways to contact opposing players.
